Was born in Stamford Township on April 4th, 1853. In Stamford he got his public school training. He was a student for a time at the Drummondville Grammar school and later attended a preparatory college at Birmingham, Mich. Matriculating at Ann Arbor University in 1875, he returned to Ontario to adopt teaching as a profession. His professional certificate was obtained at Toronto Normal School. His first school was in Crowland, where he remained a year. He was next three years at Southend, and nineteen years principal of Ridgeway school. During these years he devoted much time to the study of entomology in which branch of natural science he has obtained a wide recognition as an authority. In 1891 he succeeded the late Col James E. Morin as Clerk of Bertie. He has been a director and treasurer of Bertie Natural Gas Company since its organization in 1901. He was appointed secretary-treasurer of the Bertie and Willoughby Farmers' Mutual Fire Insurance Company in 1902 on the resignation of the late Henry N. Hibbard. Mr. Kilman is an ardent Liberal and at the last election declined nomination for the local Legislature. [show more]

Was born in Pelham Township on March 12, 1854, the son of Eli R. and Elizabeth Hyatt, and resides on the premises on which he was born. He was educated in the public school, and at the age of fourteen he entered the store of F. Swayze, Fenwick, as a clerk. He was later in the employ of Pattison & Diffin and A. O. Stringer. Since leaving the mercantile field Mr. Hyatt engaged in mixed farming and fruit growing until December of 1904, when he sold the farm, though retaining the homestead, where he still resides. He now represents the Waterloo, Anglo-American and Atlas Fire Insurance Companies, taking up the business formerly carried on by Crow & Arnold. Mr. Hyatt has been secretary-treasurer of the Pelham Agricultural Society for the past fifteen years, and the wonderful success the society has experienced is largely due to his untiring efforts in its behalf. Mr. Hyatt in 1888 was made secretary-treasurer and trustee of S. S. No. 3, a position he held until 1893. In 1895-6 he was elected deputy-reeve by acclamation, occupying also, of course, a position in the County Council. He served as reeve in 1897-8. He was president of the Township of Pelham Liberal Association for several years and is now president of the county association. [show more]

The subject of this sketch was born in the township of Humberstone in which he has ever since resided, on the farm at that time owned by his grandfather, the late John Steele. He received his early education at the Public School of Humberstone and Port Colborne, and at St. Catharines Collegiate Institute, later taking the business course at the St. Catharines Business College. At the demise of his father (the late David Steele,) Mr. Steele then a boy of fourteen, assumed charge of the home farm of 150 acres, and successfully conducted it. In 1890 the Humberstone Summer Resort Co. was formed, and they purchased some 20 acres of the Steele farm, which they have beautified into one of the cosiest and prettiest summer resorts on the continent. Mr. Steele was one of the larger shareholders of the Company, and ever since its inception has been Secretary-Treasurer of the Company. He also holds the same position in the Mutual Natural Gas Co. Mr. Steele takes a lively interest in public affairs, having been a member of the Township council, and he at present represents District No. 3 (Crowland, Humberstone and Port Colborne) in the County Council. In politics he is a Conservative, and is the energetic Secretary of the Welland County Conservative Association. [show more]

Charles Henderson was born in the Township of Wainfleet, October 7th, 1853, and, with the exception of seven years, he has always lived there. He has been extensively engaged in the timber, basswood bolts and heading, and cordwood business, combined with farming. He has held many public positions. For fifteen years he was auditor of the Township, and for three years held a similar position in the County. In 1899 he was elected to represent District No. 4 (Wainfleet and Pelham) in the County Council, and has twice been re-elected In 1900 he was Warden, and the following year he was tendered the Conservative nomination for the Legislature in Monck County. At one time he served as lieutenant in No. 7 Co., 44th Batt. For the past eighteen years he has been the energetic and successful Secretary- Treasurer of the Wainfleet Agricultural Society. L. Clark Raymond was born in Welland on October 7, 1867. He received his education at the Welland High School, and studied law with his father, the late L. D. Raymond. In 1886 he was called to the bar, and for some years he has been the senior member of the firm of Raymond & Cohoe. He has always taken an active interest in the militia, and in 1897 was appointed Colonel of the 44th Batt. Two years later he retired from the command of the regiment and is now on the militia reserve of officers. For years he has been one of the leading Conservatives of the county, holding the position of Secretary and afterwards President of the County Liberal-Conservative Association. He has also been urged to accept the party nomination in this county. He is one of the best-known young men in the county and has a host of friends. [show more]

Was born in the Township of Bertie on the 29th of June, 1852. He was educated in the public school, the St. Thomas Grammar school and Upper Canada College. For the greater part of his life he has resided near Fort Erie and has taken an active part in municipal affairs. In 1877 he was treasurer of Fort Erie, and from 1878 to 1896 he was reeve of that village with the exception of one year. From 1897 to 1903 he represented District No. 2 in the County Council. In 1886 he was warden and the following year was chairman of the committee for the establishment of the Industrial Home. For the next nine years he was chairman of the Home committee. In 1903 he was appointed Police Magistrate of Niagara Falls City, having jurisdiction in Welland and Lincoln counties. Prior to that he was clerk of the Third Division Court of the county for ten years. Since going to Niagara Falls he has been made chairman of the Collegiate institute board, chairman Court of revision for the city, and a trustee of the hospital board. For many years he has also been interested in military affairs. He was appointed Ensign in the 44th Regt. in 1877, Captain in 1884, Major in 1894,
Colonel in 1899, and Brigadier, commanding 5th Infantry Brigade, 1894. He is also a vice-president of the Canadian Military Institute. Besides his public life he has done much for historical literature and is the author of "The Story of Butler's Rangers," "Battle of Lundy's Lane," "Queenston Heights," "Battle of Fort George," "Drummond's Winter Campaign," "Fight in the Beechwoods," "Battlefields of the Niagara Peninsula," "Records of Canadian Regiments in the war of 1812," "A Century of Municipal History," "A Historical Sketch of the County of Welland." etc.. and has collected and edited the "Documentary History of Campaigns on the Niagara Frontier in 1812-14," in six volumes. He is an honorary member of the Ontario, Niagara and Lundy's Lane Historical Societies, and a member of the American Historical Association, and the Canadian Institute. [show more]

Was born in Fonthill on March 18, 1871. He is a son of Mr. J. E. Cohoe, of Wainfleet. After an education completed in the Public Schools and Welland High School, he studied law two years with Col. L. Clark Raymond and, later, three years in Osgoode Hall, Toronto, being called to the bar in 1894. The firm of Raymond & Cohoe, barristers, etc., was then formed. Col. Cohoe has always taken an active interest in the Militia. He joined the 44th Regt. in June of 1887 as a private, and since that time has worked his way up through all the offices, last week being gazetted as commander of the regiment. He has the distinction of being the youngest Lt. Col. in the Militia. In politics he is a Liberal, and for several years past has been one of that party's best workers. [show more]

C. B. Bennett was born in Gainsboro, Nov. 27, 1835. He was educated at London and went into a store in that city at the age of 16 years. Later, while still a young man, he served in stores in Welland (then Merrittville), Allanburg, Smithville and Hamilton. Afterwards he settled in Port Robinson, where for a quarter of a century he carried on a general store. Mr. Bennett has been postmaster of Port Robinson since 1897, and was reeve of the Township of Thorold in 1891-2-3-4. He was elected Warden of the County of Welland in 1893, was County Commissioner is 1899, and in 1900 was appointed County Treasurer. [show more]
