David Ross was born near Edinburgh, Scotland, and came to this country in 1862, when a boy of thirteen. He engaged in various mercantile pursuits, and in 1875 went into business in Thorold, in partnership with William Bull. The firm afterwards opened branches in Merritton, Welland and Port Colborne. Mr. Ross is now head of The Ross Company, Welland, who have the largest dry goods house in the County. The subject of this sketch has served in many municipal positions of honor. For several years he was a member of the town council, as councillor, reeve and mayor. He has also served in the County Council and for several years on the Public School Board. He is an active member of the fire department, and is also President of the County Agricultural Society. [show more]

DeW. Carter was born in Port Colborne, November 12, 1849. He is a son of the late L. G. Carter, of revered memory. The subject of this sketch has always lived in Port Colborne. He received his education in the public school and a course in the Bryant & Stratton Business College, Buffalo. When 16 years of age he went into the tug business on the canal and has owned tugs ever since. At times he has also owned vessels and had other marine interests. He is a large estate owner and a few years ago had interests in the natural gas fields. In 1892 he was reeve of Port Colborne and a member of the county council, and held the reeveship again in 1900-1ยท2, the last two years being elected by acclamation. DeW. Carter is progressive and enterprising. He has a comprehensive knowledge of the marine interests of the Great Lakes, and has given many excellent contributions to the press on this topic. He is a valuable citizen of Port Colborne and has done much towards bringing to public attention the necessity of making the Welland canal a first-class waterway. [show more]

Edward Morris was born in Benbighshire, Wales, in 1838. When ten years of age he came to Canada, and resided in Ontario county until 1860. In 1866 he began farming in Bertie township. Five years later he moved to Pelham and started the Pelham Small Fruit Farm, from which has grown the big nurseries of Morris & Wellington, known all over America. Mr. Morris is of a reserved disposition, but one of the solid men of the county. He has served as warden twice, and has frequently been spoken of as a parliamentary candidate. [show more]

E. W. Fares, was born in Humberstone Township, November 18th, 1834. He was educated in the township public schools and, after attaining manhood, took up farming, in which he has been successful. He has always lived in Humberstone and years ago won the esteem of the electors of the township. For three years he was Assessor. In 1863 he was elected Councillor, and was Reeve in 1878, '92, '93, '94. '95 and '96. In 1895 he also held the position of Warden of the County. In 1899 and 1900 he was County Commissioner, and since then has been Reeve again. The last three times he was elected by acclamation. During his life he has been a staunch Conservative and his public life has been a credit to himself and his party.

Was born in Crowland Township on October 3rd, 1827. His main business has been farming, but other matters have engaged his attention. In early life he underwent Normal School Training and for a time was engaged in teaching. Later on he was Township Clerk for a number of years. He was mainly instrumental in establishing a Post Office at Brookfield Station, of which he was Postmaster for a time. He has acted as executor and trustee for some important estates, and was collector of customs at Fort Erie for about eleven years. He is a Conservative in politics and was the standard bearer of his party in the Dominion elections of 1874, his opponent being the late William A. Thomson, by whom he was defeated. He was subsequently offered the nomination for the Ontario Legislature which he declined. [show more]

Evan Fraser was born in Thorold, March 15, 1865. He lived there for many years, receiving his education at Thorold Public and High Schools. Although he has changed his place of residence several times, he has never lived outside of Welland County. For several years he has lived at Niagara Falls South, his business being public work and contracting. In 1899-1900-1 he was a Councillor for Niagara Falls Village and last year just after the amalgamation of the Town and Village of Niagara Falls he was a candidate for the mayoralty of the new city against Mayor Hanan and ex-Mayor McCartney. He was defeated by 16 votes in a warm contest. Mr. Fraser has for years been a prominent Conservative worker, and he has several times been spoken of as a candidate for parliamentary honors.
