The subject of this sketch was born in the township of Humberstone in which he has ever since resided, on the farm at that time owned by his grandfather, the late John Steele. He received his early education at the Public School of Humberstone and Port Colborne, and at St. Catharines Collegiate Institute, later taking the business course at the St. Catharines Business College. At the demise of his father (the late David Steele,) Mr. Steele then a boy of fourteen, assumed charge of the home farm of 150 acres, and successfully conducted it. In 1890 the Humberstone Summer Resort Co. was formed, and they purchased some 20 acres of the Steele farm, which they have beautified into one of the cosiest and prettiest summer resorts on the continent. Mr. Steele was one of the larger shareholders of the Company, and ever since its inception has been Secretary-Treasurer of the Company. He also holds the same position in the Mutual Natural Gas Co. Mr. Steele takes a lively interest in public affairs, having been a member of the Township council, and he at present represents District No. 3 (Crowland, Humberstone and Port Colborne) in the County Council. In politics he is a Conservative, and is the energetic Secretary of the Welland County Conservative Association.
