Painted in 1988 by Ron Baird of Stouffville, ON, at 90 Division Street (Bell Canada building facing Cross Street), 21' X 22'. The steam engine was used to help build the old canals. The sky is patterned in hexagons which mirror the shape of the paving stones in the streetscape and create an image of honeycomb, with man as the bee, building not wax cells but canal walls. Description:Colour photograph of the mural "Tell Me About the Olden Days" by Dan Sawatzky, c. 1991. Painted in 1988 by Dan Sawatzky of Chemainus, BC, at 225 East Main Street, 50' X 20'. The mural illustrates the arrival of immigrants in Welland about 1910, with a grandfather telling his grandson what is was like being an immigrant in southern Ontario. The mural was originally painted on the old Firestone building on East Main in 1988, but shortly after the building was purchased by the Atlas and Civic Employees' Credit Union who then wanted to reconstruct and refurbish the building. The mural was moved at great effort and expense, due to a fundraising initiative by the Welland Festival of Arts. Shoalts Construction performed the move, as seen in the bottom two files, to a parking lot on 225 East Main that they owned. It is now a free standing wall not affixed to a building. It portrays the history of one of Welland's first industries, painted by a local artist. The Plymouth Cordage Company opened in 1906 and manufactured rope and twine, and were also know for their fairs, games, and family gatherings. Ross Beard's second mural shows the Welland Junction as it might have looked in winter around 1970. The water tower, station and cement blocks in the lift bridges were soon after gone. The upturned earth in the foreground signals construction of the Canal By-Pass and the end of an era. The mural was removed at some point as the property owner did not want to keep or maintain it. This mural is an example of a triptych: a painting that has one of more unifying themes, but is composed of three separate images. They show aspects of Welland's socio-economic fabric in the 1900-1910 time period. The first image shows the last spike being driven in the Welland Railway System that ran up King Street, around 1911. The second is of a band concert in Merritt Park. Description:Colour photograph of the mural "Towpaths" by Ross Beard, c. 1991. Painted in 1989 by Ross Beard of Welland, ON, at 1030 Niagara Street, 28' X 34'. The scene dates from the mid-1800s and portrays the J.G. Worth sailing vessel being pulled through the old Welland Canal by a horse on the towpath. The mural no longer exists; it was attempted to be saved when the building was demolished in 2022, but it came apart in pieces when it was taken off the side of the building. The Mike Burwell Memorial Triathlon, an annual Welland event, is depicted in this 3 panel mural. The annual race attracted 300-400 competitors every summer. It folded in 2005. From left to right the viewer captures the intensity of the runner, cyclist and swimmer. The second file is a close-up of the first panel, which shows the athletes running by the mural on the YMCA building, the result being a mural within a mural.
