This was the Festival of Arts' only non-painted mural. It contains nearly 12,000 bricks in seven colours. In terms of interpretation, the artists' intention was of a spiritual nature to visualize our trek towards, and expectation of, a real new world yet to come. Description:Colour photograph of the mural "Canal Digging" by Brian Romagnoli, c. 1991. Painted in 1988 by Brian Romagnoli of Lincoln, ON, at 176 King Street (formerly Conlin Engineering building), 28' X 31'. The mural places the viewers back in 1824 and portrays the three elements of canal building; man, horsepower, and machine power. The mural was removed when the building was renovated and the painting was replaced with balconies. The owner provided the Welland Museum with a piece from the mural to keep in its archives. Description:Colour photograph of the mural "Education" by Risto Turunen, c. 1991. Painted in 1989 by Risto Turunen of Lambeth, ON, at 285 East Main Street (formerly YMCA building, facing Division Street), 59' X 20'. This mural features the history of education in Welland. Risto painted faces taken from local historical photographs. The school teacher dates back to the late 1890s. The school building is Central Public School, which opened in 1900 and was located on Division Street (on what is now the Market Square parking lot). The first principal, Mr. Dowkes, is portrayed in 1903. The students attended Aqueduct and Maple Leaf Schools about 1925. Cheerleaders and a football player are from a 1959 Welland High yearbook. The mural depicts a ship passing through the city at dusk, after the city has calmed from the day. Ships used to go through heart of downtown Welland before the Welland Canal By-Pass was completed in 1973. The mural was removed by the property owner at some point due to water issues with the wall it adorned. Description:Colour photograph of the mural "Paint By Number Mural" by over 800 people, c. 1991. Painted in 1989 by over 800 people, at 300 Lincoln Street East (Lincoln Centre), 130' X 9'. 837 adults and children participated in the painting project. The mural was constructed on 32 plywood panels. Each one was painted at ground level and installed later at the front of the plaza. It was the idea of Wayne Hughes, creative director of 'Back to Basics,' a Welland marketing company. It shows the diverse ethnic background of Welland, represented by 10 flowers which symbolize the people from 13 cultures that played a major role in Welland's development. The mural is no longer located in the plaza, and its current location or circumstance is undetermined.
