He graduated from Victoria College in 1863, and opened for practice in Welland. Since then he has, with the exception of eighteen months, been a practitioner of this town, and is one of the best known doctors in the county. He was local superintendent of schools for Welland for several years before county examiner was appointed, and one of the provincial examiners for medical students for four years. The Schooleys are one of the oldest families in the peninsula. The grandfather of the doctor came into Canada from New Jersey with three brothers in 1776. [show more]

He is of Loyalist stock on both his father's and mother's side. The Burgars came from Hoboken, N. J., about 1790, and purchased property in Thorold Township along the river, and it was here that his father, George R. E. Burgar, was born. His maternal ancestors were Nova Scotians, but moved to Norfolk County. J. H. Burgar has been a resident of Welland County since 1852. He was educated at the High School and at Toronto University. In 1869 he started business in Welland as a druggist. He was elected Deputy-Reeve of the town in 1879, and served almost continuously in the town and county councils until 1890, being Warden in 1888, the year the Industrial Home was completed. He was made Town Treasurer in 1893. His appointment as Police Magistrate came last June. In religion Mr. Burgar is a Presbyterian, having been an elder in the Welland church for 25 years. He took an active interest in the Sunday School, and was for a long time its superintendent. [show more]

The series ran between March 1904-June 1905. Text reads: John H. Atwood was born at Maplewood on the Niagara, in the Township of Willoughby, County of Welland, on the 4th day of April, 1866. He received his education at the Black Creek school and in the city of Buffalo. On October 1st, 1890, he started in the grocery business in the village of Bridgeburg, later on adding undertaking and furniture. By careful management and strict attention to business, he has been very successful, and at the present time he has one of the largest places of business in the village, occupying about 4.500 square feet of floor. In January, 1899, he was elected Reeve of the Village of Bridgeburg, which office he held four consecutive years. In January last he was elected by acclamation County Commissioner for District No. 2, to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Colonel Cruikshank. He is the youngest member of that body. He is president of the Bridgeburg Brass Band, a prominent member of several fraternal societies, and takes an active part in all public matters. [show more]

The series ran between March 1904-June 1905. Text reads: The subject of this sketch is of United Empire Loyalist descent. He was born in the township of Gosfield, in the county of Essex, and came to the Niagara district when but eight years of age. He received his education at the public school, the Fonthill Grammar School, and the Academy in Sandwich, Ill. He taught his first school at Hinkley, in that state. In 1870 he returned to the Sandwich Academy, at the same time taking up the study of anatomy, preparatory to taking a medical course. He returned to Canada in 1872 and taught the Rosedene School until 1876, when he accepted the position as principal of the Merritton Public School. His health failing, he bought a farm in Pelham in 1877, upon which he now resides. He is a farmer and a strong advocate of farmer's rights, believing the farmer should "sit at the first table." He entered municipal politics in 1897, and represented his township as deputy-reeve and reeve for five years, and at present represents District No. 4 (Pelham and Wainfleet) in the County Council.
