Text reads:

The subject of this sketch is of United Empire Loyalist descent. He was born in the township of Gosfield, in the county of Essex, and came to the Niagara district when but eight years of age. He received his education at the public school, the Fonthill Grammar School, and the Academy in Sandwich, Ill. He taught his first school at Hinkley, in that state. In 1870 he returned to the Sandwich Academy, at the same time taking up the study of anatomy, preparatory to taking a medical course. He returned to Canada in 1872 and taught the Rosedene School until 1876, when he accepted the position as principal of the Merritton Public School. His health failing, he bought a farm in Pelham in 1877, upon which he now resides. He is a farmer and a strong advocate of farmer's rights, believing the farmer should "sit at the first table." He entered municipal politics in 1897, and represented his township as deputy-reeve and reeve for five years, and at present represents District No. 4 (Pelham and Wainfleet) in the County Council. Mr. Johnson is a Justice of the Peace for Welland County.
