James A. Ross was born in St. Ann's, January 13, 1869. He was a son of William N. Ross, and received his education in the Smithville Public and High Schools, and later in the St. Catharines Collegiate Institute. He secured a teacher's certificate and taught school in Monck County and the City of St. Thomas. Some years ago he organized the co-operative store in Wellandport, known as the Empire Store, and managed that until six years ago, when he resigned to accept the nomination of the Conservative party for the County of Monck. At the last general election for the Legislature he fought a good fight against the Hon. R. Harcourt, and he is again in the field ready for the next contest. At present he is Inspector for the Excelsior Life Insurance Co. of Toronto. [show more]

James Battle was born at Thorold on November 29th, 1865, and was educated at the Thorold Separate School, the Collegiate Institute, St. Catharines, and Upper Canada College, Toronto. Mr. Battle was a member of the Thorold Town Council during the years 1888-89, deputy reeve in 1890-91, and reeve for 1892. In 1893 he was a member of the Thorold Separate School Board, and in 1894-95 was president of the Thorold Township Agricultural Society; and is a member of the Public Library Board, president of the Thorold Board of Trade, and vice-president of the County Conservative Association. On November 23rd, 1903, he received the nomination of the Conservative Association. On November 23rd, 1903, he received the nomination of the Conservative party for the House of Commons, which honor, however, he declined for business reasons. When a member of the Thorold and County Councils, he was called the "silver-tongued orator." He is admitted to-day to be one of the brightest and best platform speakers in the Niagara District. He is essentially a business man, energetic and successful in anything he undertakes. He was married on October 23rd, 1893, to Miss Mary Conlon of Thorold, only daughter of Thomas Conlon, who was the Liberal candidate for the House of Commons in this county in 1887, and a family of three children have blessed their union. James Saurin was born at Port Colborne in 1843, and has continuously resided there since. He commenced as a sailor boy in 1859, and rapidly advanced to positions of trust, both on steam and sailing craft, until 1874, when he entered the tug towing business on the Welland Canal, being owner of different well known boats. In 1892 he disposed of his marine interests and entered the mercantile business, taking his son as partner, and now conducts a general store under the firm name of James Saurin & Son. Mr. Saurin is an example of what may be accomplished by energy and uprightness, having risen from a poor boy to one of the solid men of Welland County. He served as Reeve of Port Colborne and was a member of the County Council in 1896, subsequently serving several years in the village Council. [show more]

James Silverthorn was born in Thorold Township on October 18th 1840. His father, Jacob Silverthorn, was an early settler in this district. The old homestead, one and a half miles north of Welland on the canal, was recently purchased by the Government. Mr. Silverthorn, for six years previous to 1881 was a resident of Welland town, living for a time retired, and for a time following the occupation of builder and contractor. His home for a score of years has been in Crowland, a short distance east of Welland. Though frequently pressed to enter public life, Mr. Silverthorn would never consent. A life-long Conservative, he still adheres to the principles of the Conservative party. In religion he is a Methodist. [show more]

James Smith was born in the Village of Chippawa on June 6, 1837. He grew up on a farm, and in 1862 he married Miss Mary Ryan, the same year taking up a farm of his own in Willoughby township. While a resident of that municipality he had the favor of the electors many times. He held many municipal offices. For seven years he sat in the County Council, and in 1881 was warden. Afterwards for 6 years he was clerk of Willoughby, and during the same time served as license commissioner. In January, 1889, he was appointed sheriff of the county, and has since resided in Welland. Sheriff Smith is a faithful and conscientious officer, and is held high in the esteem of his fellow men. [show more]

J. W. Vanalstine was born in Crowland Township in 1840 and has lived in that township ever since. Besides being one of the oldest residents he is naturally known to every one in the municipality and many also about the county. He was educated in the Public School, Belvadier Academy and the Niagara Falls Grammar School. He has many times been a member of the municipal council and for four years was Reeve of Crowland, three times being elected by acclamation. For two years, under the old method of forming county councils, he was a member of that body. In politics he is a Conservative. [show more]
