Was born in Hay Township, Huron County, on July 19, 1859, the son of John Gross, who is still living at the age of 80 years. His grandfather, Jacob Gross, was a German, and settled in Lincoln County in 1818. Mr. Gross studied law with W. M. German, M. P., and in 1897 was called to the bar. As a Liberal standard bearer he twice carried Welland County, being elected in 1900 and 1902. Mr. Gross is a member of the English Church. [show more]

John H. Atwood was born at Maplewood on the Niagara, in the Township of Willoughby, County of Welland, on the 4th day of April, 1866. He received his education at the Black Creek school and in the city of Buffalo. On October 1st, 1890, he started in the grocery business in the village of Bridgeburg, later on adding undertaking and furniture. By careful management and strict attention to business, he has been very successful, and at the present time he has one of the largest places of business in the village, occupying about 4.500 square feet of floor.
In January, 1899, he was elected Reeve of the Village of Bridgeburg, which office he held four consecutive years. In January last he was elected by acclamation County Commissioner for District No. 2, to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Colonel Cruikshank. He is the youngest member of that body. He is president of the Bridgeburg Brass Band, a prominent member of several fraternal societies, and takes an active part in all public matters. [show more]

The subject of this sketch is of United Empire Loyalist descent. He was born in the township of Gosfield, in the county of Essex, and came to the Niagara district when but eight years of age. He received his education at the public school, the Fonthill Grammar School, and the Academy in Sandwich, Ill. He taught his first school at Hinkley, in that state. In 1870 he returned to the Sandwich Academy, at the same time taking up the study of anatomy, preparatory to taking a medical course. He returned to Canada in 1872 and taught the Rosedene School until 1876, when he accepted the position as principal of the Merritton Public School. His health failing, he bought a farm in Pelham in 1877, upon which he now resides. He is a farmer and a strong advocate of farmer's rights, believing the farmer should "sit at the first table." He entered municipal politics in 1897, and represented his township as deputy-reeve and reeve for five years, and at present represents District No. 4 (Pelham and Wainfleet) in the County Council. Of Burnaby, was born in the township of Wainfleet in 1861, the son of William. Hill, a native of Northumberland, England, who came to Canada in the early fifties. He was educated in the public schools and was early apprenticed as a carpenter. For the past 23 years he has followed the occupation of contractor and builder, in which he has experienced an ever-increasing success. He also conducts a farm of 50 acres at Burnaby. Mr. Hill is a member of the Church of England and in politics is a Conservative. He served on the Township Council in 1899, 1900 and 1901, and was elected Reeve by acclamation for the years 1902, 1903 and 1904. In the election this year for the reeveship he defeated Major John Barwell by a majority of 303. [show more]
