Text reads:
James Saurin was born at Port Colborne in 1843, and has continuously resided there since. He commenced as a sailor boy in 1859, and rapidly advanced to positions of trust, both on steam and sailing craft, until 1874, when he entered the tug towing business on the Welland Canal, being owner of different well known boats. In 1892 he disposed of his marine interests and entered the mercantile business, taking his son as partner, and now conducts a general store under the firm name of James Saurin & Son. Mr. Saurin is an example of what may be accomplished by energy and uprightness, having risen from a poor boy to one of the solid men of Welland County. He served as Reeve of Port Colborne and was a member of the County Council in 1896, subsequently serving several years in the village Council.
