Text reads:

James Silverthorn was born in Thorold Township on October 18th 1840. His father, Jacob Silverthorn, was an early settler in this district. The old homestead, one and a half miles north of Welland on the canal, was recently purchased by the Government. Mr. Silverthorn, for six years previous to 1881 was a resident of Welland town, living for a time retired, and for a time following the occupation of builder and contractor. His home for a score of years has been in Crowland, a short distance east of Welland. Though frequently pressed to enter public life, Mr. Silverthorn would never consent. A life-long Conservative, he still adheres to the principles of the Conservative party. In religion he is a Methodist.
