DeW. Carter was born in Port Colborne, November 12, 1849. He is a son of the late L. G. Carter, of revered memory. The subject of this sketch has always lived in Port Colborne. He received his education in the public school and a course in the Bryant & Stratton Business College, Buffalo. When 16 years of age he went into the tug business on the canal and has owned tugs ever since. At times he has also owned vessels and had other marine interests. He is a large estate owner and a few years ago had interests in the natural gas fields. In 1892 he was reeve of Port Colborne and a member of the county council, and held the reeveship again in 1900-1ยท2, the last two years being elected by acclamation. DeW. Carter is progressive and enterprising. He has a comprehensive knowledge of the marine interests of the Great Lakes, and has given many excellent contributions to the press on this topic. He is a valuable citizen of Port Colborne and has done much towards bringing to public attention the necessity of making the Welland canal a first-class waterway.
