Text reads:
William McCleary was born in Thorold in 1853, and he has been a resident of that place ever since. He is the senior member of the firm of McCleary & McLean, big lumber merchants. Mr. McCleary has had an extensive political career. He started in being elected to the council and mayoralty of his native town and later to the county council, reaching the warden's chair in 1884. In 1890 Mr. McCleary was chosen by the Conservatives as their standard bearer for the Legislature and he won a sharp contest, winning the county for the Conservatives for the first time in several terms. In 1894 he was defeated, but two years later he was elected at the general elections for the Dominion House of Commons, which seat he held for one parliament. Of late years Mr. McCleary has been in delicate health, necessitating him retiring from politics, but he is still considered the most popular man in the Conservative party in the county. [show more]
