Text reads:
Was born on December 2nd, 1848, on the farm in Thorold township, near Welland, on which he now resides. His father, John Gainer, was a son of Jacob Gainer, one of the first settlers in this part of the county, taking the homestead from the Crown. W. H. Gainer was educated at the common school and at Welland Grammar School. His municipal experience began in 1879, when he was elected a member of Thorold Township Council. For six years following 1881 he served as deputy-reeve, and in 1889 he attained the reeveship. At the beginning of the year he was elected by acclamation to represent District No. 5 in the County Council. Mr. Gainer has always taken an active interest in agricultural matters, having been president of Welland Farmers' Institute for two years. At present he holds the position of Secretary-Treasurer of the Institute, the duties of which he has capably discharged for several years. For the last few years Mr. Gainer has held the office of Secretary of the Welland County Agricultural Society, and it is largely due to his untiring efforts that the Society has met with the success it has had. Among stockmen Mr. Gainer is well known as a breeder of shorthorn cattle. In politics he has always been a staunch Conservative.
