Was born in Thorold Township on February 14, 1849. His parents were Robert S. and Louisa Garner, of the Quaker Road. He is a great grandson of George Garner, who was a pioneer settler in this district, coming from England at the time the U.E. Loyalists first came to this county. George Garner was an active participant in the war of 1812. The subject of this sketch was educated in the township schools and the Welland Grammar School. When a young man he learned the blacksmithing trade, but afterwards branched into a larger field of business. He has been in several enterprises and lately has become a successful stock buyer. For years he has been a district auctioneer and one of the best and most successful who ever wielded the hammer. In public life he has several times been in the municipal council and the public school board of Welland. He is now the probable candidate of the Reform party for County Commissioner for District No. 5.
