Louis Blake Duff (1878-1959) was the prominent scholar and historian for Welland. This booklet was owned by his friend George H. Smith, a prominent Port Colborne historian, who wrote additional titles of important texts in the notes section. Duff seems to have compiled his list of important texts for the benefit of local school teachers. [show more]

Description:Black and white photograph of the South School (also known as east side school) in Welland, on Hellems Avenue and Dorothy Street, building constructed in 1858. The photograph was taken in the early 1900s when it was by then the YMCA building. The school house was sold to the YMCA in 1906. After 1922, it was the headquarters of the Welland Sea Cadet Corps. The property was purchased by Loblaws in 1947. Today is is the site of the Welland Transit bus terminal.
The two-room brick structure was built for $1,200 in 1858. It subsequently accommodated the pupils of the Old Grammar School when they were transferred from the Court House. E. R. Hellems was the first teacher at the school, succeeded in order by Mr. Stutterd, Rowland Hill, J. Hamilton Burgar, and William Bond.
