|
Subject:Beckett family Type:Text Date:1970s-1980s |
Description:Handwritten note concerning a short history of the Beckett family of Effingham. The letter was written in the 1970s or 1980s by a member of the Effingham Heritage Association. The text reads:
"About the year 1793, three brothers came from England to the Short Hills. Their names were Samuel, Peter and Stephen Beckett and they were mill-wrights, though Samuel is reported to have been a surveyor, also. Being mill-wrights they were attracted by the abundant water power on the Twelve Mile Creek and settled at what is now Effingham. Samuel Beckett buying the mill built by David Secord. They also bought other Secord property, Lots 4, 5, and 6 Con. 4 and Lot 2 Con. 3. This must have been after 1811 as this property is marked 'David Secord' on the map of that date. One of them had a mill on what is now Miss Mary Jones' place and another woolen mill on the creek at Joseph Abbott's. Effingham was called Beckett's Mills for many years, and the creek Beckett's Creek." [show more]
