Description

Newspaper clipping reproduction with a photo of the Welland Atlas Steels baseball team, considered the most powerful baseball team to ever represent Welland. They won the 1944 Ontario Senior A baseball championship going over the London Majors.

Notable is the pitcher Sal Maglie, who was born in Niagara Falls, New York. He was in Welland because he went into defense work with Atlas Steels when the US entered World War II, along with two other defense plants. He became one of the legends of Major League Baseball when he played for the New York Giants in the 1950s. His .657 career winning percentage is near the top of all MLB pitchers.

Front row, from left to right: Sal Maglie; George Haramplus; Bill Buntrock; Frank Chase; Eddie McBee. Back row, from left to right: Oscar Wilson; Jack Fairs; Bobby Schnurr; Gord Grogan; Jack Goss; Max Kaminsky; Doug Wallace. Mascots in front are McFarlane; Frank Matyok; Tommy Steers.
