William Manley German was born in Hilliar Township, Prince Edward County, on May 26, 1851. He was educated in the public school and Victoria College, Cobourg. He later studied law in Belleville and was called to the bar in 1882. Since then he has been practising in Welland. His first public office was the deputy-reeveship of Welland, which he held one year. He was elected to the House of Commons as a Liberal in 1891, against the late Dr. John Ferguson, but was unseated. In 1894 he was elected to the Legislative Assembly, and re-elected in 1898. He resigned in 1900 to run for the House of Commons, which he won, and last week was re-elected by a large majority.
