"The Literary Society was the first extra-curricular activity at Welland High. In all probability it began in the Bald Street Grammar School. An elite group, the Literary Society was the predecessor of the Student Council. "Not only does the Literary Society afford the opportunity of a "Get-together" function, of enjoying the ability of their school-mates, but it gives the promising musician, speaker, elocutionist, or whatever his or her line may be, a wonderful chance to practice complacency and self-confidence when appearing before an audience."
