Description:Black and white photograph of Mickey Rooney posing for the camera at the Fort Erie Race Track, flanked by Rudy Pilous and Conn Smythe. T.N. Morrison was the managing editor of the Welland Tribune for many years. Rudy Pilous, a close friend of Morrison's, achieved fame as coach of the Chicago Blackhawks, winning the Stanley Cup with them in 1961. He lived in St. Catharines in his later years and died there in 1994. He is buried in the Victoria Lawn Cemetery. Conn Smythe, in addition to his ownership of the Toronto Maple Leafs, also had business interests in horse racing, and may have had been attending to watch his own team. Coincidentally, Mickey Rooney later filmed a scene for the 1979 movie "The Black Stallion" at the Fort Erie Race Track. [show more]

Description:Microfilm copy of an article about Mike Smrek of Welland being drafted by the Portland Trail Blazers, from the June 19, 1985 edition of the Welland Tribune. He was then traded to the Chicago Bulls the same night. Mike later won championships with the Los Angeles Lakers in 1987 and 1988 as the backup centre to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, making him the first Canadian to play on an NBA championship team. Mike was born in Welland and went to Eastdale Secondary School. [show more]
