The text reads "This certificate entitles (illegible, but possibly Jeremiah or Jedediah Merritt Eq.) to (illegible) shares of stock in the Welland Canal Company, of the value of twelve pounds ten shillings, Provincial currency, ($50) per share. The said shares are transferrable in the books of the company, at the office of their agent in New York, or at the Company's office in St. Catharines, (where the dividends will be payable) upon surrender of this certificate only." Signed by president John H. Dunn.
