It is captioned 'Lock No. 8 is 1,380 feet long between the inner gates and is the longest lock in the world, equal to almost three city blocks. A ship passing through the new Welland Ship Canal from Lake Ontario to Lake Erie is lifted a total of 326.5 feet.'
