The Royal Yacht of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II inaugurated the opening of the St. Laurence Seaway in 1959. The vessel is shown passing through the City of Welland. The 25-mile Welland Canal, which links Lake Ontario and Lake Erie, permits ocean vessels from the four corners of the world to enter the industrial centre of the North American continent.
