| Various documents on Kanadski Glasnik (Canadian Herald), Canada's first Serbian language newspaper, published in Welland in 1916 | Kanadski Glasnik newspaper | Text | 1916 / 1971 |
|
|
Subject:Kanadski Glasnik newspaper Type:Text Date:1916 / 1971 |
Description:Various scanned documents concerning Kanadski Glasnik (Canadian Herald), Canada's first Serbian language newspaper, which was published in Welland in 1916. It lasted for about one year, and was printed by the Welland Telegraph.
The first document is an article from the August 20, 1970 edition of the Welland Tribune. It features Mrs. Spiro Hutalarovich returning to Welland to visit friends after 55 years of being away. She and her husband were among the proprietors of Kanadski Glasnik.
The second and third documents show the listing of Kanadski Glasnik in the Canadian Newspaper Directory for the year 1917, telling us it was a weekly newspaper in the Serbian language, between 4-6 pages, with a circulation of 1,750.
The next document is a letter received in 1971 by the Welland Public Library from Olga Markovich after we sent out a request for any copies of the paper. Olga had family ties to the newspaper, and had come to the conclusion there were no copies of the paper in existence anymore.
The final image is from the front page of the Welland Telegraph on June 16, 1916, announcing the new paper.
Kanadski Glasnik was the first newspaper in Canada to be published in Serbian, the second was Glas Kanade (Voice of Canada) published in Toronto in 1934. [show more]
