Summary: Molly started with Bell in traffic department. Earned $9.50 per week. Board $6.50 (1938-1939). At that time about 200 operators were used, fewer when switched to dial. Description of old switchboard, excitement of big night events especially during war. Extra operators needed the night war declared. Lots of personal services given by operator: wake-ups, time-checks etc. Hours, work week, wages, working conditions. Many women worked at Bell, result was that shareholder purchase plan, Bell shares owned by women in large numbers. [show more]
