The subject is the construction of the Welland Canal By-Pass and the relationship between man and machinery. Bas used the baroque style of the Dutch Masters with dark and heavy colours contrasted with yellow.

Painted in 1988 by Brian Romagnoli of Lincoln, ON, at 176 King Street (formerly Conlin Engineering building), 28' X 31'.
The mural places the viewers back in 1824 and portrays the three elements of canal building; man, horsepower, and machine power.
The mural was removed when the building was renovated and the painting was replaced with balconies. The owner provided the Welland Museum with a piece from the mural to keep in its archives.

This was the first of two murals illustrating commercial life in early Welland. It captures the interior of an early storefront as well as the pedestrian traffic at a street corner in the late 1800s.
